Abstract
|
Numerous deficiencies have been observed in the design and execution details of steel buildings in earthquake-affected areas. However, despite these deficiencies, the performance of steel buildings has been recorded as significantly better than that of concrete buildings. Several complete collapses have been documented in concrete structures, whereas complete collapses in steel buildings have been observed to be very rare. This paper describes the deficiencies identified in the steel buildings of the earthquake-affected regions of Kermanshah province. The results of the investigation indicate that the majority of recorded damages are due to two factors: the lack of proportionality in the design of ductile members and improper execution of welding and connections in steel structures.
