Abstract With the growing need for transitioning toward clean energy, increasing the share of renewable energy sources has become a global priority. The integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy systems, is crucial for optimizing the current distribution systems. Despite the various benefits of DER integration, it also presents technical challenges; DERs can cause rapid power output changes, leading to voltage instability and overvoltage, thereby impacting the power quality and equipment reliability. Addressing voltage instability requires costly new grids, therefore optimizing existing networks is essential to reduce these costs. To achieve this, the voltage status of the target area should be assessed and locations suitable for DER integration must be identified to ensure stable operation and voltage stability. This study proposes a new evaluation index, the voltage margin evaluation index (VMEI), to address the limitations of the existing indexes; the index can be used for evaluating the voltage stability and promoting DER integration in a region. Using the VMEI, we assessed the suitability of different DERs for current distribution system in Jeju (South Korea). The results indicated that the VMEI effectively evaluated the voltage stability across different nodes and feeders; the areas with higher DER penetration exhibited lower voltage margins, while the feeders with lower DER penetration exhibited improved voltage stability. Our study provides valuable insights for promoting the integration of DERs into the current distribution systems, thereby supporting the global effort toward sustainable development.
