Metal Alloys have vital role in many technological and industrial applications, however their vulnerability to corrosion inevitably has disruptive issues on huge economical losses and catastrophes. A systematic study of sol–gel process was used to prepare environmentally-friendly silica xerogel coating by various acidic and basic catalysts. Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as precursor and organic solvent then applied on carbon steel by dip-coating method. Prepared coated samples were characterized with FE-SEM, EDS, FT-IR, OM and gravimetric analysis. The corrosion rate was used for evaluating corrosion resistance. This research was applied to achieve the optimized parameters for efficient corrosion protective coating, herein by comparison of the results, we concluded the 100 - 200 percent improvement of corrosion resistance against bare samples at the same period of immersion in NaCl solution. The samples with optimized parameters presented the ascending corrosion resistance from 0.274 mm/yr to 0.124 mm/yr which confirmed suitability of coating for protective applications.
