Abstract The effect of adding 1wt.% Gd on aluminum alloy's microstructure, mechanical, and wear behavior was investigated. Results show that the Al3Gd and Al3(Fe, Gd, Si) phases were precipitated after adding Gd in addition to Al and Al3Fe phases detected in the base alloy. The hardness value increased, and the friction coefficient and wear rate decreased with adding Gd. The dominant wear mechanism was adhesive even after adding Gd; however, a sign of abrasive wear appeared in the alloy with 1 wt. Gd. Improvement of wear behavior may be attributed to the formation of hard phases after the addition of Gd.
