Title Application of CO2 -induced carbonate minerals for soil treatment
Type Presentation
Keywords CO2-induced carbonate minerals, FeCO3, CaFeCO3, Soil improvement
Abstract This research utilized carbonate minerals generated through the capture of CO2 for the purpose of creating an eco-friendly cement to enhance soil quality. The carbonate cements were formed by combining free carbonate ions (CO32-) obtained from CO2 capture with Fe2+ (FeCl2) and Ca2+ (CaCl2), resulting in carbonate minerals such as CaFeCO3 and FeCO3. These minerals were employed to enhance the characteristics of granular soil. The uniaxial compressive strength test (UCS) was conducted on sand specimens treated with carbonate cements under dry conditions. The sample treated with CaFeCO3 exhibited a higher strength compared to the one treated with FeCO3. Generally, both types of carbonate minerals imparted reasonable strength to the treated samples. SEM analysis confirmed the presence of carbonate minerals in the treated specimens.
