Abstract Purpose: This article aims to provide an overview of academic research, identify areas of focus on digital insurance and provide insights into the current development using bibliometric analysis and bibliographic visualization maps to discern its growing interest in the academia in the last 10 years. Design/methodology/approach: Data was collected from Scopus database using industry relevant keywords. The data analysis was accomplished through VOSviewer software by conducting a systematic review of how the insurance industry has embraced digitalization. The bibliometric analysis was adopted to get a deeper understanding of country authorship, the number of publications per year and per country, most-cited documents, number of publications per document source and number of publications per author in the field. Findings: The study highlights the research gaps and future research areas in the field of insurance, challenges and how the industry can overcome them through the clustering of bibliometric keyword analysis. Furthermore, the findings have revealed that the application of digital tools has been around in the insurance industry in countries like United States, China, and India. These findings suggest that these countries play a significant role in developing research collaboration and serve as a source for information about research studies on digital insurance. Originality: This study is the first to use bibliometric analysis to examine digital insurance on the African continent. As a result, the research provides insurance companies and researchers who want to switch to digital solutions with an established theoretical basis.
